Peru

Alpaca, Peruvian highlands

Love this shot: the volcano in the background, the alpaca's expression, the colorful tassels on its ears. Just a quick stop during a bus trip to Puno. Magical.

South Korea

Lotus flowers, South Korea

Anapji Pond is an incredible expanse of lotus flowers that I happened to hit just at perfect peak bloom. Rain softened everything and made the saturation even more vibrant than it would have been. Stunning.

Japan

Chinatown, Nagasaki, Japan

By chance I happened onto a dragon festival in Nagasaki's rich Chinatown. The dancers were really making the puppet come alive, and the streets were packed with onlookers, many in colorful yukatas.

Japan

Rengesou blossoms, Wakayama, Japan

This humble flower is one of my favorites, blooming each spring in fallow rice fields. Often confused for clover, it's a vine that's a type of vetch, a member of the pea family.

Japan

Hongu Taisha, Wakayama, Japan

No sight was more welcome to monks on a religious Kumano pilgrimage than that of the giant torii gate that marked their arrival at Hongu Taisha shrine, the end of the journey.

Peru

Cusco girl and baby

I got to recognize this girl over the few days I was in Cusco, one of the many sweet souls who staked out a spot in the city's central square.

Mexico

Cueva de la Olla, Mexico

This spectacular ruin is tucked under a ledge that took 4 hours in a pickup to reach, going over some of the most precarious roads I've ever travelled. Totally worth it though, with stunning scenery at every turn and the ruin all to myself.

Peru

Andean Condor, Peru

Spectacular sight as these condors, relatives of the California Condor, soar upwards on morning thermals.

USA

Lizard, USA

Not sure of the species, but this little guy let me get close enough for a couple of great shots before he retreated to the safety of a rock.

Snowy owl

Snowy Owl, USA

This beautiful bird is an immature that came to West Dennis beach for the winter. I was probably 50 feet away and shot this with a 70mm lens. Amazing.

Balandra Bay, Baja

Balandra Bay, Mexico

I call this the world's largest swimming pool. The shallow, warm waters just go on and on and on.

USA

Cranberry bog, USA

A frost-nipped cranberry bog in late fall. I love the contrast between the bright greens and reds of the berries, with the frigid chill of the frost and winter on the way.
